Animal cruelty shocker: A 23-year-old man from Bedwas has been sentenced to 16 weeks in jail after being exposed for his torment of animals. Lloyd Gary Robert Davies was discovered to have filmed and shared horrifying videos of lurchers attacking badgers, a legally protected species, following a joint investigation by the RSPCA, Gwent Police, and Natural Resources Wales.

The appalling footage revealed the extent of Davies’ crimes, including one particularly distressing video of a man using a knife on a badly injured badger after it had been attacked by dogs. Even Davis’ own lurcher, Shirley, was pulled into the brutal chaos, suffering severe injuries through illegal fights.
Newport Magistrates’ Court heard Davies’ guilty plea to charges under both the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 and the Animal Welfare Act 2006. District Judge Sophie Toms, expressing her regret at not being able to impose a longer sentence, called it “one of the most serious cases of cruelty” she had encountered.

Despite claiming remorse and attributing his actions to bad influences and personal challenges, including health issues, the court order ensured that Davies will never keep animals again. Shirley has since been rescued, rehabilitated, and rehomed thanks to the RSPCA’s efforts.
This case underscores the strong stance taken against animal cruelty and wildlife offences. As RSPCA and Gwent Police collaborated to ensure justice, it serves as a stern reminder that harming animals for pleasure is intolerable and punishable. Authorities stress their commitment to safeguarding animals, as highlighted by RSPCA and Natural Resources Wales.
Let this be a testament to the relentless pursuit of justice for innocent animals and a call to remain vigilant against acts of cruelty.
