Massive investment is on the way to make old coal tips across Wales safer and more sustainable. The Welsh Government has unveiled phase one of a new safety grant, injecting millions into vital maintenance work until the end of the 2029-30 financial year.
Key projects in this initiative include:
– £7m for Nant-Yr-Odyn in Merthyr Tydfil
– £5.6m for the British Regeneration Project in Torfaen
– £4.8m for Graig Ddu Dinas in Rhondda Cynon Taf
– £3.8m for Pen Yr Englyn, and
– £2.3m for Tylorstown landslip remediation.
In total, a whopping £80m has been allocated to secure over 400 former coal tip sites! This new approach enables local authorities and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to tackle both minor maintenance and major projects, some worth up to £7m. 🏗️
Huw Irranca-Davies, Deputy First Minister, heralded this as a “significant milestone” towards coal tip safety. He emphasised that beyond making communities safer, this investment boosts the local economy and job market. 🚀
Additionally, the initiative includes exciting job opportunities, with the Welsh Local Government Association offering placements in environmental engineering. This programme not only prioritises safety but also nurtures the next wave of experts in flood risk management and mine remediation. 🌿🌊
