π§ Exciting Developments in Cardiff! π§

Spotted on Rover Way, a massive metal structure has sprung up next to a bustling Cardiff road! But fear not, it’s not just a scenic addition. This is the beginning of a crucial Β£35m project designed to protect over a thousand homes and a traveller site from the threat of flooding. ππ
First announced in 2021, this ambitious scheme will see 100,000 tonnes of rock introduced along the coastline to combat rising sea levels and increasingly frequent storms. The Welsh Government is backing this vital initiative, which aims to raise the riverbank and embankments to keep our city safe and sound.

The formidable structure isn’t a wall, but steel piling set to be driven into the ground, a key component in this extensive flood defence plan. Upon completion, it will shield 1,116 residential and 72 non-residential properties, plus enhance protections for the Rover Way Traveller site against severe weather events expected once in 200 years!
Cardiff Council has big plans with a rock barrier, sheet piling at Lamby Way roundabout, and improved protections for the Wales Coastal Path. This catapults our city’s resilience into the next century while preserving the natural beauty and walking routes loved by all.

As Councillor Michael Michael highlighted, “The greatest risk to Cardiff is flooding and rising sea levels.” Efforts to strengthen our coastal defences have never been more crucial. Weβre all looking forward to seeing how this monumental project progresses. Stay tuned for more updates! ππ§π·ββοΈ
