Mike, who married Zara, daughter of Princess Anne, in 2011 found that stepping down from rugby wasn’t as simple as expected. 🏉 Leaving behind the camaraderie of his teammates was challenging, and it had its effects on his relationship with Zara. 💔
In a candid chat on Grand Slammers in 2023, Mike shared, “Everyone thinks that marrying Zara means it’s all fine and dandy… but you need a job. It’s not that easy. You get quite institutionalised into rugby… It’s a way of life.”
It took some time to figure out his new role outside the sport. Zara was there through it all, and according to Mike, it took about a year to find himself post-rugby. 🗓️
Despite the challenges, Mike fondly recalls their fun first date, which turned out to be quite the boozy event. 🍷 And yes, the couple discovered a shared love for a bit of merrymaking!
From first dates to royal duties, Mike and Zara have been together for 15 years, celebrating 14 years of marriage. Today’s plans might be a tad more subdued with their three lovely children, but we bet they’re filled with love and laughter. 🎈👨👩👧👦
