When Ellen Swarbrick’s face started swelling up in spring 2022, she thought it was just hay fever. Like most of us would, she grabbed a couple of antihistamines and went about her busy life in London, attributing her fatigue and swollen ankles to her new job and the summer heat.

But when her symptoms worsened to blurred vision and flu-like conditions, a trip to the doctor turned her world upside down. Ellen was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease. Shortly after, she learned she was in stage five and urgently needed a transplant.

In a twist of fate, Ellen’s mum, Kathryn, stepped up as her life-saving hero, donating her kidney in May 2025. The procedure was a success, and Ellen now has a renewed appreciation for life – and her mum!
Ellen’s journey highlights the importance of paying attention to our bodies’ signals. What seemed like stubborn hay fever symptoms were actually her body pleading for help. Now, she’s eager to spread awareness about kidney disease.
With her mum by her side, Ellen is thriving. She shares, “Every time I see my mum, I get emotional. She’s completely changed my life.”
Ellen still occasionally reflects on how her youthful, busy life in London masked her condition. But with a future that’s now filled with hope and opportunity, she’s more grateful than ever.
A big shout out to the unsung heroes like Kathryn, whose selfless love and determination give others a second chance. 💙
