Meet Naomi Smith, a mum from Gloucestershire who’s been battling excruciating jaw pain for nearly 30 years. Naomi’s jaw can only open up to 14mm, making even the simplest tasks like eating and speaking incredibly painful. Through years of suffering, the pain has spread throughout her body, leading to constant nausea and even causing her to vomit up to 30 times a day. Despite countless hospital visits and a range of diagnoses from fibromyalgia to arthritis, Naomi has felt unheard and dismissed by the healthcare system. She says she’s seen her health and spirit deteriorate while trying to find answers.

Finally diagnosed with severe temporomandibular joint disorder and jaw arthritis in 2025, her partner Darryl Brooks is now raising funds for a life-changing jaw-replacement surgery. Unable to work due to her condition, Naomi hopes for a future without constant pain and dreams of a life where she can actively care for her four children again. Darryl describes it as “horrible” watching his partner struggle and vows to support her as best as he can.

The couple has turned to the kindness of strangers to fund Naomi’s £95,000 jaw-replacement surgery via GoFundMe, as NHS waiting lists could mean a four-year wait. Despite having raised just £140 so far, the pair remain hopeful that with enough support, Naomi can reclaim her life.

Your contribution, big or small, could bring Naomi a step closer to a pain-free future and the chance to watch her children grow up without the shadow of her illness.
