A mother of three, Naomi Powell, has been banned from driving for a year after a momentary lapse in concentration led to a serious accident. Distracted by her crying baby, Powell’s car struck pedestrian Catrin Jones in Llangefni, leaving Jones with a fractured pelvis and collapsed lungs.
The incident, caught on council CCTV, occurred in December 2023. Powell admitted causing serious injury due to careless driving after initially blaming her car’s “A pillar” for obstructing her view. However, she later reflected on the situation, acknowledging her mistake and expressing genuine remorse for the accident.
Jones, who spent eight days in hospital, revealed the lasting impact of her injuries. While her broken bones have healed, she’s still in pain, reliant on a crutch, and anxious as a car passenger. The accident has dramatically changed her life, making daily tasks difficult and affecting her ability to support her family.
In court, it was noted that since the accident, Powell has completed her degree and is set to start work as a speech and language therapist. Despite the serious nature of the incident, the judge acknowledged Powell’s positive character and her willingness to contribute to the community through her new role.
In addition to the driving ban, Powell received a six-month community order requiring her to complete rehabilitation activities. She will also pay court costs and a statutory surcharge.
