A heartbreaking mystery still haunts Newport nearly a decade later. In January 2016, the body of a newborn baby was discovered inside a black leather handbag near an industrial estate. Despite tireless efforts by Gwent Police, the identity of the baby and the whereabouts of the mother remain unknown.
The baby, wrapped in a towel with “St Anne’s” hand-written on it, was found at Imperial Park, Coedkernew. Authorities confirmed the towel was from St Anne’s Hospice, a clue that, so far, hasn’t led to any breakthroughs. A post-mortem revealed the baby was full-term, and the mother likely gave birth alone.
This isn’t about blame. The police stress that the appeal is purely for the welfare of the mother. They understand this could be a distressing time for her and are eager to offer the right support.
