NATO has issued a clear message to Moscow, emphasising their readiness to respond using any necessary means, whether militarily or otherwise. The alliance reassures that its commitment to mutual defence—famously known as Article 5—is absolutely “ironclad”. 🤝🔗

The urgency for this statement came after Estonia triggered NATO’s Article 4, a call for consultation when any member’s security is under threat. Interestingly, Article 4 has been invoked nine times since NATO’s inception in 1949, with two of those occurrences happening this month alone due to Russian incursions.

In recent incidents, Russian drones were reportedly shot down over Poland, and another taken down in Romanian airspace. Such actions have prompted tough words from NATO allies. Poland’s PM Donald Tusk noted that the airspace violation brought the country dangerously close to “open conflict” — the closest since WWII.

The UK is also stepping up, with Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper addressing the UN Security Council, declaring the nation’s readiness to intercept unauthorised aircraft in NATO airspace. The UK’s Royal Air Force has already deployed Typhoon jets as part of the Eastern Sentry mission, flying their first mission over Poland on September 19.
