Excitement is mounting in Cardiff as legendary duo Oasis prepare to launch their much-anticipated reunion tour with two sold-out performances at the Principality Stadium in early July. The city centre is expected to be bustling with tens of thousands of eager fans on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th July, and local authorities are gearing up for an extraordinary influx of visitors. With major road closures planned to ensure public safety, event-goers are being strongly advised to use public transport to reach the gigs.

Transport for Wales (TfW) and Great Western Railway (GWR) have responded proactively to the expected surge in travellers by announcing extended rail services on both concert dates. Cardiff Bus has already warned passengers that its schedules will be disrupted by city centre closures from 3pm to midnight across the two evenings, but the rail companies are reassuring concert-goers that extensive preparations are in place to accommodate the surge.

Both TfW and GWR have issued updates confirming that additional train services will be introduced for Oasis fans journeying to and from the events. GWR, in particular, will run six extra trains after each show, increasing capacity by a total of 4,000 additional seats per night. These extra services are set to play a crucial role in safely dispersing the huge crowds expected at the stadium after the conclusion of each concert.

To manage the expected crowds, a special queuing system will be introduced from 10pm onwards. Mainline rail passengers will queue on Central Square, while those travelling on the Valley lines will find dedicated queues at the rear of Cardiff Central Station. Passengers are being urged to familiarise themselves with these arrangements before travelling, as station staff will be on hand during the evening to provide guidance and support.

It should be noted that Cardiff Bus Interchange will not be available after 3pm on gig nights due to the closures. In addition, Cardiff Queen Street Station will shut its doors at 10pm except for those with accessibility needs or individuals heading to Cardiff Bay. This means that those intending to use public transport late in the evening should make appropriate arrangements ahead of time.

Security and ticketing checks are also set to be increased during the event period. Revenue Protection inspectors will be present both before and after the gigs to ensure all rail travellers hold valid tickets. With expected congestion and the potential for delays, authorities recommend having tickets ready and leaving plenty of time for journeys on both days.

Rachel Geliamassi, the Customer Services Director at GWR, expressed her enthusiasm for the events, while offering practical advice: “We are pleased to help support these unmissable gigs at the Principality Stadium, and we are committed to transporting fans as sustainably as possible. Extra services are being laid on to meet demand, but we anticipate the trains will be exceptionally busy, particularly just before and after the concerts. We urge all customers to plan their journeys and check relevant travel information prior to setting off.”

Similarly, Georgie Wills, who manages customer delivery and events planning at Transport for Wales, highlighted the organisation’s commitment to safe travel. “It’s fantastic to welcome so many visitors to Cardiff for this summer’s spectacular line-up of events. We’re putting detailed guidance in place for concert-goers, including information about queuing systems, and we recommend customers check our updates before travelling. Our teams will be out in force to assist passengers throughout these busy evenings.”

Travellers and residents can stay abreast of further updates by following Cardiff Council’s dedicated travel advice hub, which includes a complete list of road closures and recommendations for navigating the city during the busy event period.

As Cardiff prepares to play host to Oasis and their legion of fans, the joint efforts of local authorities, transport partners, and event organisers aim to ensure the spectacular concerts are accessible, safe, and enjoyable for all. With a little forward planning and cooperation, the city looks set for two unforgettable nights of music and celebration.
