Nearly 1,000 Locals Rally Against Proposed Swansea Tire Plant, Facing Rejection

Big news for Swansea! Plans for a tyre incineration plant at the Westfield Industrial Estate have hit a roadblock. Nearly 1,000 residents raised a ruckus about potential environmental concerns, and it seems their voices have been heard. Swansea Council is gearing up to reject the permit application from Tyregen UK Ltd, who hoped to process a whopping 7,650 tonnes of waste tyres annually using a method called pyrolysis.

The council cited “insufficient technical competence” and “inadequate environmental management systems” as reasons for the draft refusal, which could become official if no further objections are received by 25 August. However, Tyregen UK does have the option to appeal.

Despite the setback for Tyregen UK, they claim the operation focused on recycling without burning tyres. But with 975 objections and local sentiment decidedly against the incinerator, it seems the community’s concerns are front and centre in this decision. Let us know your thoughts below! 🛞🌿
