Cardiff is taking a bold stand to promote health and well-being by implementing a ban on junk food ads on council-owned properties. Following the footsteps of the Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff becomes the second Welsh council to roll out these measures. The move aims to curb the presence of unhealthy food advertising in our everyday lives and encourage healthier lifestyle choices in the heart of Wales.

This new policy doesn’t just target junk food; it’s a wider initiative prohibiting ads for petrol and diesel vehicles, payday loans, tobacco, and vapes too. Cardiff is ready to unroll the red carpet for campaigns promoting healthier, more sustainable options instead.

The ban echoes the broader public health strategy supported by the Welsh Government. It addresses high-fat, salt, and sugar (HFSS) foods, aligning with future regulations set to change how these products are displayed in stores from March 2026. No more impulse buys at the tills – the new rules will keep HFSS products out of high-traffic areas in shops and limit promotional offers like “buy one get one free” on these items.

Cardiff’s council member, Dan De’Ath, expressed this is a significant leap towards making Cardiff a healthier, greener city, saying that while people can still indulge in their favourites if they choose, public property will no longer be a billboard for unhealthy picks.

Existing advertising contracts will continue until they naturally expire, with the policy undergoing reviews every three years to stay effective and relevant. This initiative epitomises Cardiff’s ambition to create a fairer city for all.
