ππ΄ Honeymoon Dream Becomes a Hospital Nightmare π΄π

For Jess and Conor Phillips, the honeymoon was supposed to be a dreamy getaway in Cape Verde, but it turned into a terrifying ordeal. Just three days after saying ‘I do’, Jess found herself battling a potentially deadly illness instead of enjoying newlywed bliss.

The trouble began when Jess, 31, started experiencing relentless diarrhoea, with over 100 panicked trips to the bathroom in just three days. Soon, she was also struck by vomiting, unable to hold down any food. Sucking on Pringles for salt, it became clear this was more than just a typical holiday bug.

Admitted to hospital, Jess was treated for gastroenteritis, but further tests revealed it was shigella, a bacterial infection often linked to contaminated food. Shockingly, this could have come from poor hygiene standards at their luxury resort.
After leaving the hospital, the nightmare wasn’t over. Faced with a hefty late check-out charge at the hotel, Jess was left furious and disheartened. “I didn’t get how they could justify the cost when the room was clearly free,” she said.
The trip, booked through TUI and costing Β£3,000, was supposed to be a relaxing escape. Instead, it left Jess and Conor with dashed dreams and a sour taste. With hundreds of British tourists reportedly falling ill in Cape Verde over recent years, serious questions are being raised about safety standards at holiday resorts.
Jess, still recovering and demanding a refund, shared, “We had three lovely days, but that was totally overshadowed by how ill I was. I took all the precautions, and yet… this.”
The hotel expressed regret over Jess’s experience, stating they uphold strict health protocols. Meanwhile, TUI promises to review the case, ensuring holidaymakers’ health and safety are prioritised.
Here’s hoping for better travel days ahead, but Jessβs story is a sobering reminder: even paradise can have its pitfalls. π΄
