The Ospreys found themselves in hot water over the weekend, issuing a public apology to Scarlets’ investors after a fan-posed question at a recent event caused a stir. During a fan engagement evening on 23rd September in Swansea, a question asking if the new Scarlets investors, House of Luxury Group (HOL), were “con men” was accidentally broadcast. This unintentional slip made its way onto the Ospreys’ social media, triggering an intense backlash.

Scarlets’ investors weren’t best pleased, understandably, as tensions among Welsh rugby regions are already high. The backdrop to this drama is a proposed shake-up by the Welsh Rugby Union to cut the number of professional teams. HOL, who’ve only recently started an exciting investment partnership with the Scarlets, are passionate about the club’s future. Despite the hiccup, HOL is keen to be a long-term player in Welsh rugby, aiming to pass WRU’s fit and proper test soon.
The Ospreys have since apologised for any distress caused to HOL and those connected with them, ensuring that the mishap was unintentional. With the WRU board set to make a major decision by the month’s end, the landscape of Welsh rugby could soon change, but both sides are campaigning hard to stay in the game.
