The Oxford Union has come under fire after its president-elect, George Abaraonye, made controversial remarks about the tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk. Kirk, a well-known ally of Donald Trump, was killed in what’s been described as a political assassination at a Utah Valley University event.

Abaraonye allegedly made several insensitive comments on social media following Kirk’s death, reportedly including posts like “Charlie Kirk got shot, let’s f****** go” and “Charlie Kirk got shot loool.”

In response, the Oxford Union has publicly condemned his statements, emphasising its commitment to free speech and civil discourse, while firmly opposing political violence. They stressed that Abaraonye’s comments do not reflect the views of the current leadership or committee.
Our hearts go out to Kirk’s family, especially his wife and young children, during this devastating time. Tributes have poured in from political figures worldwide, including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who shared his condolences online. In a nod to Kirk’s legacy, supporters will gather in Whitehall to remember him, organised by the UK branch of Turning Point USA, which Kirk helped found.
It’s a somber moment that reminds us all of the importance of respectful dialogue and the impact of our words.
