In a major clampdown on illegal e-bikes, South Wales Police made a strong statement in Swansea City Centre. As part of “Operation Lathyrus,” authorities stopped 30 riders, seizing 10 e-bikes found to be breaking the rules. This operation follows a two-month engagement phase aimed at curbing the anti-social use of these bikes.

The law states that e-bikes must have pedals, a max power output of 250 watts, provide assistance only when pedalling, and cut off assistance at 15.5 mph. While 20 riders were in compliance, the remaining 10 weren’t so lucky. Their bikes exceeded legal limits, leading to seizures and offences reported under the Road Traffic Act.

Insp. Andrew Hedley stated, “We’re committed to educating riders about the law. However, those who ignore the rules will face stricter action.” With over 30% of the bikes non-compliant, this initiative helps protect both the public and riders from potential dangers.

Operation Lathyrus isn’t over yet, as it continues to target illegal riders impacting Swansea’s residents and visitors. Remember, safe e-biking means abiding by the law! 🛴✨#BikeSafety #SwanseaNews #EbikeClampdown
