Tragic Loss: Teen’s Passing Sparks Reflection on Mental Health Support
We’re heartbroken to share the story of Alex Duce, an 18-year-old who tragically passed away days after being found in her flat by police last September. The young care home worker and beauty student from Ebbw Vale was described as a “popular” person with “many friends.” Her sudden disappearance had her family and friends worried, prompting a call to the police.
On the morning of September 11, 2022, officers visited Alex’s flat in Tredegar following concerns for her wellbeing. Despite earlier visits by police, it was several hours later in the afternoon when they managed to enter the flat and discovered her. Sadly, Alex had hanged herself and was later pronounced dead in hospital after life support was withdrawn on September 16.
The inquest revealed some gaps in communication and resources, including police officers struggling to immediately access essential equipment. These delays have led to reviews and changes, ensuring more accessibility of critical tools in future incidents.
Reports indicate Alex had previously struggled with mental health issues and self-harm. While efforts were made to locate her rapidly, more could be known about assessing risk levels in such situations.
