The retired Det Supt Stuart Clifton, the man behind catching the notorious nurse Lucy Letby, is now questioning her guilt. With a shocking claim that’s making waves, he suggests Letby might be the victim of “the greatest miscarriage of justice this century.”
We all remember the heartbreaking case where Letby was handed 15 whole-life sentences for the tragic deaths of seven babies and attempts on seven others. But Clifton, after reviewing the evidence, believes there’s more to the story. He argues that poor medical care and natural causes, rather than malice, could be the real culprits behind the tragic outcomes.
Crucially, a group of 14 medical experts, including Dr. Shoo Lee, who played a vital role during her lengthy trial, are backing this theory. They voiced in 2024 their doubts about Letby’s culpability, and now, Clifton’s review supports this. He emphatically stated, “I am totally satisfied that Lucy Letby is innocent.”
This revelation brings up haunting memories of another infamous case, Beverley Allitt, but Clifton warns against assumptions. In Letby’s case, he believes the inquiry may have started with the wrong presumption.
The detective isn’t alone. There were several reviews by senior paediatricians from 2015 to 2016, with none suggesting foul play. Even the Post-it notes police found in Letby’s home, which were once seen as confessions, are now under scrutiny.
Currently, the Crown Prosecution Service isn’t pursuing further charges against Letby. And on 4th February, Netflix is set to release “The Investigation of Lucy Letby,” offering unseen footage and interviews.
