Llyr Powell, Reform UK’s Caerphilly Senedd by-election candidate, has spoken out about his former boss Nathan Gill’s shocking actions, branding them a “betrayal” and “abhorrent.” Gill, the ex-leader of Reform UK in Wales, recently admitted to eight counts of bribery related to Russian involvement. Powell, who once worked as a caseworker under Gill, firmly denies any knowledge of the misconduct, explaining it wasn’t part of his role.

Responding to questions from ITV Wales, Powell expressed his dismay at Gill’s actions, stating, “Taking money off a foreign state? That’s a complete and utter betrayal. It’s deeply upsetting for someone who called himself a patriot to do such a thing.”
Powell has faced scrutiny and even attacks from Welsh Labour, who demand answers about what he knew of Gill’s dealings. Eluned Morgan, Wales’ First Minister, has raised national security concerns, prompting Powell to dismiss Labour’s inquiries as a “desperate smear campaign.”

Facing these pressures hasn’t deterred Powell. He states, “I’ve put up with a lot—death threats, assaults—but I’m more determined than ever to do what’s right for the people here.”
Welsh Labour has amplified their critique, questioning Powell’s knowledge and response to Gill’s crimes. Their candidate, Richard Tunnicliffe, urged Powell to clarify his stance. Despite these challenges, Powell remains committed to his campaign, insisting that he acted with integrity throughout.
As the Caerphilly by-election heats up, the focus remains on Llyr Powell under the shadow of these recent revelations. He stands resolute amidst the turmoil, eager to prove his dedication to the constituents and the principles he upholds.
