Exciting news for dog lovers and breeders in Wales! 🐶 A new scoring system for licensed dog breeders could be on the horizon, akin to the food hygiene ratings we’re already familiar with. This comes as a recommendation from a determined group of councillors in Carmarthenshire, one of the hot spots for dog breeding in the UK.

The idea is to introduce a mandatory rating from zero to five, displayed at breeder’s premises, ensuring transparency and maintaining high standards for our furry friends. This change aims to level the playing field for those licensed breeders who feel overshadowed by unlicensed operators. Currently, the “buy with confidence” scheme is voluntary, limiting its reach, but this new proposal seeks to make high standards compulsory and more visible.
The council’s task force found varying standards among breeders during their year-long review. The need for fair and comprehensive regulations is clear, as Carmarthenshire still hosts among the highest numbers of licensed breeders, even though the number has dropped recently.

Licensed breeders are navigating tight regulations, but they believe this new system could create a fairer environment. The challenge? Well, the current staffing isn’t enough to manage the thousands of animal premises, and there are constant battles against illegal breeders. But the hope is that more resources and a better system will bring positive change.
Some standout recommendations include improving licensing fee structures, enhancing microchipping systems, and tracking down unlicensed breeders more effectively.
The Welsh Government is all for it! They stress the importance of maintaining excellent animal welfare standards and have introduced significant measures since 2014 to ensure this.
Let’s hope these ideas come to life, making a lasting difference in the dog breeding world here in Wales. 🐕♥️ Keep your eyes peeled for updates!
