Visiting Auschwitz for a day is an experience that goes beyond the horrors history embeds in our minds. As we drove through a town equipped with fast food chains, supermarkets, and dance studios, the realisation hit: Auschwitz isn’t isolated. It stands amidst everyday life, a striking contradiction.
Arriving early, we set off to Oswiecim, once home to a thriving Jewish community before the Nazi regime tore it apart. Walking through the town square, it’s hard to fathom the dark history it harbours beneath its surface. The Jewish Centre, a poignant reminder, saves glimpses of a time before the nightmare unfolded.
Auschwitz-Birkenau is an overwhelming confrontation with the past, where we trudge through snow, witnessing the site where unspeakable atrocities occurred. The infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” gate, barracks filled with personal items left behind, and the remains of gas chambers tell stories no words can articulate. The eerie silence is punctuated by chilling exhibits, including spectacles, shoes, and even cans of Zyklon B—a grim testament to the horrors faced by millions.
Despite this sombreness, there’s bewilderment. The presence of a café, post office, and gift shop at Auschwitz I is a jarring sight, clashing with the site’s past.
As we move to Birkenau, vast and solitary, the reality deepens. The tracks where prisoners arrived paint a haunting picture of despair—split-second decisions sealed fates here.
Our day ends with a memorial, led by Rabbi Barry Marcus, tying the deeply moving experience into a profound reflection. Students like Eleanor and Non share that while enlightening, the trip has left them grappling with unanswerable questions about humanity’s duality—the horror inflicted versus the suffering endured.
