Former King of the Jungle, Matt Willis, known for his role in Busted, recently opened up about his stint on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! back in 2006. While many remember the iconic moment he crossed the jungle bridge as a winner, for Matt, it wasn’t all celebrations behind the scenes.
In a candid chat on his On The Mend podcast, Matt revealed that joining the show was a decision made during a tough phase, fuelled by a need to boost his music career amidst personal struggles. “I was thinking of a time when I lost my own narrative,” he shared. Under pressure to raise his profile for a solo album release, he reluctantly agreed to enter the jungle. Though it skyrocketed his fame, it came with unexpected downsides.
“Everywhere I went, they just wanted to talk about I’m a Celebrity…and it really bummed me out,” he confessed. For someone in the throes of addiction, this sudden spotlight was overwhelming. What was meant to revive his music career became an unexpected rollercoaster of fame.
Post-jungle life saw Matt teaming up with his wife Emma to present the show’s spin-off from 2007 to 2008 and later reconnecting with his musical roots in Busted. And while he looks back on his jungle journey as “probably a bit of a mistake,” his story is a testament to overcoming challenges and finding one’s path. 🎶❤️
