Tanveer Shah, a sales boss from Vale of Glamorgan, has triumphed in his battle against his former employer, Foodhub, after being unfairly dismissed for working remotely from Egypt. Imagine being on holiday, catching Covid-19, and having no choice but to work remotely, only to find yourself jobless! That’s precisely what happened to Shah.

Joining Foodhub back in 2018, Shah quickly climbed the ranks and became a UK field sales manager. But things took a dramatic turn when Foodhub’s CEO, Ardian Mula, flagged Shah’s notably low expenses. Suspecting something fishy, Mula directly confronted Shah, who argued his national role didn’t require him to physically be everywhere. Disagreeing, Mula accused him of stealing from the company and dismissed him on the spot.

However, the employment tribunal had a different view and ruled the process a sham. They awarded Shah over £61,000, highlighting flaws in the company’s approach to his dismissal. Judge Maxwell pointed out how the investigation seemed orchestrated just to justify Mula’s decision, rather than being genuinely fair and comprehensive.

This victory sheds light on the importance of fair treatment at work, especially in today’s hybrid working world. Well done to Shah for standing up for himself in a situation that could have easily gone unsupported. What’s your take on working remotely while abroad? Fair game or crossing the line?
