**Lesley Garrett Returns to the Stage in ‘Follies’ Following Cancer Treatment**
Internationally celebrated soprano Lesley Garrett will return to the limelight in a significant new role, having been cast in Northern Ireland Opera’s forthcoming production of *Follies*. This notable stage comeback follows her recent surgery after being diagnosed with a rare cancer.
Garrett, renowned for her wide-ranging musical career, has been recovering after treatment for thymoma, a tumour originating from the thymus gland. Earlier this month on ITV’s *This Morning*, the beloved singer revealed details of her surgery, discussing the potential impact the illness might have had on her voice and performance. Now on the mend, she is set to take the stage at the historic Grand Opera House in Belfast this autumn.
Speaking about her role, Garrett shared her delight at joining the company for the very first time. “I’m so excited to be coming back to Belfast and particularly to be making my debut with Northern Ireland Opera at the age of 70,” said the singer. “Sondheim’s *Follies* is a masterpiece, and it’s an honour to be invited to perform the iconic role of Heidi Schiller.”
The musical, written by Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman, explores the memories and ambitions of a group of former showgirls returning to the site of their Broadway triumphs for one last reunion before the theatre’s demolition. Garrett will portray Heidi Schiller, the opera soprano among the celebrated “Weismann’s Follies” alumni, adding her formidable experience to this emotional and acclaimed narrative.
This production represents a dual milestone for Garrett—her 45th year in the entertainment industry, and her first time appearing with Northern Ireland Opera. The decision to return to work in such a major role underscores her resilience and the high regard in which she is held within the UK performing arts community.
The cast of *Follies* features an array of talent, including jazz singer Jacqueline Dankworth, taking on the role of Carlotta Campion. Dankworth, herself recognised for her part in the original West End cast of Sondheim’s *Into The Woods*, brings further star power to the ensemble. Joining them are West End regulars Anna-Jane Casey and Annette McLaughlin, who will portray former roommates Sally Plummer and Phyllis Stone, respectively.
Direction for this revival comes from Cameron Menzies, with musical direction provided by Greg Arrowsmith. Menzies’ expertise is expected to offer a fresh approach to the Tony-winning production, which remains famous for iconic numbers such as “Broadway Baby”, “I’m Still Here”, and “Losing My Mind”.
Since its Broadway debut in 1971, *Follies* has received critical acclaim and audience adoration, holding a distinguished place in the musical theatre canon. Its seven Tony Awards, achieved at the 1972 ceremony, remain a testament to its enduring appeal.
The production is scheduled for a limited run, taking place from 13 to 20 September at the Grand Opera House, and anticipation is mounting among theatre-goers in Belfast and beyond. With stars of Garrett’s calibre gracing the stage, ticket demand is expected to be brisk.
For Lesley Garrett, the return to performing marks both a personal and professional triumph—a celebration of resilience and the lasting power of music. Her journey from illness back to the stage will no doubt inspire audiences and colleagues alike in the months to come.
