Residents in a Welsh village aren’t thrilled about a newly approved solar farm. The site, just east of Treoes, will span 17 hectares and is set to generate 9.9MW of renewable energy. While it’s a big win for Wales’ green energy goals, villagers and local councillors, like Cllr Christine Cave, are worried about losing agricultural land and the visual impact the farm will bring.

“Villagers already know what’s coming and aren’t very excited,” shared Cllr Cave. She highlights the concern about losing farmland, which she mentions is an issue in various planning meetings. Despite the push for renewable energy by the Welsh Government, which aims for 100% renewable electricity by 2035, the change isn’t all welcome. 🌿⚡

Developers, Windel Solar, promise that they’re taking steps to minimise the impact, such as landscaping efforts, claiming the project will also bring 280 temporary jobs. But concerns over the substantial loss of farmland and disruption linger.

Even with acknowledgements of potential slight harm to heritage sites like the Llangan Conservation Area, the council seems aligned with the green benefits on this. The solar farm, with an operational lifespan of 40 years, will eventually see all its equipment removed, and efforts to restore the land will follow.
