Meet Donna Halcrow, a woman battling an unwelcome reality in her rented home in Morriston, Swansea. Donna claims her house is plagued with rats and a leaky ceiling that’s been ignored for years. Missing fire alarms and wires gnawed by rodents, it’s hardly a place anyone would call home.

Donna says her sleepless nights are spent catching leaks with buckets on her bed, while avoiding the room due to water seeping through the light socket. Sometimes, the smell of dead rats forces her and her daughter—who has sensory needs— to seek refuge at friends’ houses.

Despite complaints to her letting agency and private landlord, Donna insists little has been done over the years. She says the roof issues have persisted for four years, causing the current leaks and forcing her to refuse to pay rent.

Landlord Alan James, however, states he’s spent £16,000 on improvements, including a new kitchen and bathroom. Eisken Properties, the new letting agents on the scene, claim they’ve been proactively addressing the necessary repairs since getting involved in July 2025, citing scheduling complications and contractor availability as reasons for the delays.

While temporary fixes have been implemented, including covering ceiling holes, the residents are still awaiting permanent solutions. Eisken Properties assert they’ve been working through the repair list and further extensive work is underway.

It’s a tale of frustration that spotlights the importance of landlord accountability and tenant advocacy. 🐀🌧️
