Exciting News for Rhondda! 🎉 The first steps towards reopening the historic Rhondda Tunnel have received the green light! Plans to excavate and reveal the Blaencwm portal, marking a major milestone in transforming this disused rail tunnel into a fantastic walking and cycling path, are now underway. 🚴♀️🚶♂️

The Rhondda Tunnel Society, the driving force behind this project, envisions creating a unique visitor experience. The goal? To attract adventurers of all ages to explore what will become Europe’s longest walking and cycling tunnel connecting Rhondda and the Upper Afan Valley. With plans to remove 8,000 cubic metres of spoil to unearth the entrance, this project is lined up to be a game-changer for tourism in north Rhondda Cynon Taf.
Local Councillors are buzzing with anticipation. Wendy Lewis and Danny Grehan shared their excitement about the project’s potential to boost local heritage and tourism. Loretta Tomkinson commented on the community’s robust support, stating, “This brings a unique walking and cycling route to the area. It’s a thoughtful step forward.”

Since its closure to rail traffic in 1968 and subsequent filling with colliery waste, the tunnel has been under the care of the Westminster Department for Transport. However, the Rhondda Tunnel Society’s recent examinations confirm its sturdy condition, paving the way for restoration and transformation into a community asset.
There’s strong backing from officials and community voices alike, with letters of support flooding in. The project plans include not just opening the portal but also enhancing local landscapes with tree planting and grass seeding, boosting biodiversity in the area.
As this visionary project progresses, it promises to renew interest and pride in the Rhondda for locals and visitors alike. Let’s cheer on the journey towards unveiling one of the region’s hidden historic treasures! 🙌
