Despite rejection and setbacks, her resilience and passion have driven her to the forefront of pivotal investigations in maternity services. Today, she chairs the largest maternity review in British history, ensuring that voices of women and families are heard loud and clear.
Born in Aberaman in 1966, Donna faced challenges many of us can’t imagine. She bravely organized her own O-levels after being uprooted from school, and took bold steps to protect her siblings from an abusive environment. Although initially rejected by Bristol Royal Infirmary for her nursing aspirations, Donna’s determination only grew stronger. She trained as a nurse in Neath, later becoming a distinguished midwife, leading maternity services across the globe including in Oman.
Her resolve to transform healthcare was cemented by a promise she made early in her career to a newborn named Gina, whose preventable death fueled Donna’s unwavering dedication. She’s since investigated serious failings within maternity care, challenging and changing systems for the better.
As Donna reflects on her journey, she credits her enduring love of learning to her childhood. Despite not speaking to her mother Patricia in the last 20 years of her life, Donna acknowledges her mother for instilling the joy of reading. Though her childhood was plagued with instability, there were bright moments in the south Wales valleys which she cherishes.
A proud mother herself, Donna balances her professional life with a strong family bond, regularly visiting her roots in Wales. Her story is not just about survival but about the power of determination and the impact one can have when they refuse to let adversity win.
