Former Wales captain Sam Warburton has shared a standout moment from his career that marked the rise of England star Sam Underhill. Warburton recalls the time when a young Underhill caught his attention by delivering a tackle on a Wales legend that left him amazed. Still a university player back then, Underhill impressed Warburton with his tackling prowess, proving he was destined for greatness.
Fast forward to today, Underhill has earned 43 caps for England and made over 100 appearances for Bath. Despite setbacks due to injuries, his defensive skills have left a lasting impression on many, including Warburton, who even named him the best tackler he’s ever seen in action.
The journey began during a Wales training session before the 2015 World Cup when Underhill was playing for the Ospreys. Warburton, nursing an injury, witnessed Underhill “cut in half” Welsh powerhouse Jamie Roberts. Instantly, Warburton knew Sam Underhill was going to be a world-class player. He may have missed out on the Lions tour in 2021 due to a hip injury, but Underhill’s potential to shine on the international stage remains undeniable.
