Ryan Reynolds suffers setback in transfer plans as Gary Neville advises Premier League star against joining Wrexham
Wrexham’s co-owner Ryan Reynolds has received a setback in his attempt to bring Jamie Vardy to the club, as former Manchester United player Gary Neville has suggested the Leicester City forward should remain with his current team. Vardy, who is nearing the end of his contract with the Foxes after agreeing to a one-year extension last year, is under speculation about his future plans, with talks ongoing regarding a potential new deal.
With Leicester’s recent relegation from the Premier League raising uncertainty around Vardy’s next move, Wrexham has emerged as one of the possible destinations for the seasoned striker. However, Neville raised doubts about the likelihood of Vardy joining a rival team after being with Leicester for almost 13 years. He highlighted that Vardy’s options could include staying at Leicester, playing abroad, or even retiring.
Neville expressed on The Gary Neville Podcast, “If his body feels good then it’ll come down to how he feels. These lads are so fit. He’s obviously lost a yard [of pace], but I think there are opportunities that exist now in America or in other parts of the world where you can go and play and you can enjoy yourself.” The former United captain suggested that Vardy’s experience and skillset could still be valuable in the Championship, especially for Leicester.
Wrexham, who are currently positioned third in League One and aiming for their third consecutive promotion, had made significant transfer moves earlier this year by acquiring Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith. Despite their ambition to strengthen the squad, Neville remains doubtful that Vardy would consider leaving Leicester, referring to the player’s loyalty and previous rejection of a move to Arsenal in 2016.
Regarding Vardy’s potential destinations, Neville stated, “I don’t see him going to play for anybody else in the Championship… I just don’t see him staying in this country and playing for another club.” He emphasised that Vardy’s choices might involve staying at Leicester for another season, moving overseas, or retiring from professional football.
Should Vardy decide to make the move to Wrexham, he would reunite with former Leicester teammate Matty James, who is currently a regular starter under Phil Parkinson. James has previously commended Vardy’s character and footballing abilities, highlighting his impact both on and off the field. Despite Vardy’s age, James endorsed his continued involvement in the sport due to his exceptional fitness levels.
As Wrexham fans eagerly anticipate potential new signings, the prospect of adding a player of Vardy’s calibre to their squad has generated excitement. However, with Gary Neville’s advice ringing in Vardy’s ears, the decision ultimately lies with the player himself as he evaluates his options for the upcoming season. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will be closely watching how the transfer saga unfolds as they strive to bolster Wrexham’s roster for future success.
