Scotland rugby star Stuart Hogg opens up about the biggest mistake of his life and finding peace. Retiring in 2023 to save his marriage seemed like a good move for Hogg, but he quickly realised it was a decision made amidst a turbulent personal life. In a heartfelt revelation, the ex-British and Irish Lions player admitted he was dealing with personal battles, including a domestic abuse charge, an addiction to alcohol, and the strain of taking anti-depressants. It was a tough time for Hogg, who hit rock bottom, losing his sense of self in the process.

However, things began to turn around for Hogg during the Doddie Aid cycle ride from Scotland to Rome. Feeling like part of a team again reignited his love of rugby and camaraderie. “I missed the buzz, the changing room, the banter,” Hogg confessed. It’s this newfound clarity that prompted a move to French side Montpellier, where he rediscovered joy on the field. Though he’s unlikely to reach his previous career heights, Hogg is embracing his new chapter with an open heart.

Living near Montpellier, just minutes from the beach is a bonus, though being away from his kids remains a challenge. Excitingly, he hopes they’ll visit him in France, as he continues making positive strides for himself and his family. Finally valuing himself, Hogg reflects on the importance of selflessness, “I used to think being selfish was strength. But I took that too far. I hurt people. Now, Iām learning to be selfless for the right reasons ā for my kids, my partner, my team.” Finding this balance has given Hogg a new perspective, one where peace is prioritised over past struggles. Here’s to fresh starts and new journeys! šš
