πΏπΌ In the heart of Caerphilly, amidst the hustle and bustle of the impending by-election, a powerful message comes from the Ukrainian community: βWe are not here to take, we are here to give.β πΊπ¦

As the town prepares for what promises to be a pivotal election between Reform and Plaid Cymru, the Ukrainian families are standing firm against negative narratives surrounding the Nation of Sanctuary. This initiative, which supports refugees and asylum seekers, is becoming a hot topic in Welsh politics.

Last Friday, the community gathered with local schoolchildren to plant bluebells and daffodils, symbols of hope and unity. They shared their stories, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome they initially received. Yuliia Bond, who moved to Caerphilly in 2022, reminisced about the Ukrainian flags that adorned the town when they first arrived. However, she noted a shift in attitudes driven by misinformation, stating, “We are here to contribute, not to be seen as a burden.”
Despite the challenge of negative stereotypes, Ukrainians in Caerphilly are integrated into the community and working hard, paying taxes, and contributing positively. Olha Cherniavska, another Ukrainian who settled in Wales, praised the friendliness of locals and expressed gratitude for their continuous support.
Vira Mandrika stressed that the Nation of Sanctuary is misrepresented by some as a negative policy. The scheme aids legal refugees, not “illegal immigrants.” Those at the forefront of this debate are challenging the disinformation and highlighting the scheme’s true purpose: fostering a sense of belonging and solidarity.
Politicians from various parties attended the event to show support, emphasising the importance of unity and humanity. They argue that supporting the Ukrainian community aligns with Wales’s values of kindness and support for those in need.
