🚨 Heartbreaking Loss for Farmer Due to Acorn Poisoning! 🌳🐑

Geraint Davies from Bala has suffered a major blow after losing 35 sheep to acorn poisoning, potentially costing him around £6,000! Despite moving his flock to higher ground, the threat isn’t over as more sheep show symptoms. 😟

This year’s bumper acorn crop—caused by a “mast” year after a dry spring—has created a dangerous situation for various livestock. Acorns may contain harmful tannins and phenols that lead to kidney failure when consumed in large quantities. Green acorns are especially hazardous. 🌰💔
“If the climate keeps changing, we might see more of these bumper crops,” warned Mr. Davies. Unfortunately, there’s no surefire cure once sheep are poisoned—relocating them is the only prevention. 🚜
For fellow farmers, awareness is key! Be on the lookout for symptoms like loss of appetite, constipation, and tar-like droppings in your herds. While pigs can handle acorns, sheep, cattle, and horses are at risk.
Even with proactive steps, Geraint’s farming operation, which includes around 1,000 breeding ewes, is facing tough times. Disposal costs are another heavy burden, and insurance coverage for such poisoning is often elusive. But as Geraint points out, “At least we could move some to safer areas.” 🚑
Let’s learn from Geraint’s experience and safeguard our livestock. Stay vigilant, farmers, and share this to keep everyone informed! 🙏 #FarmingCommunity #AcornAlert #StayVigilant
