A violent brawl described as ‘absolutely disgraceful’ played out in full view of horrified passers-by at Cardiff Bay’s busy Mermaid Quay last summer, with the chaotic scenes now seeing four individuals facing punishment from the courts. The altercation, involving both men and women, left members of the public reeling and has prompted renewed calls for responsible behaviour in Cardiff’s nightlife districts.

The incident in question occurred on 8 July 2023, when Matthew Gulliford, 34, and Maria Young, also 34, visited a Wetherspoon’s pub in Cardiff Bay. What was intended to be a simple evening out soon descended into disorder as a heated row broke out with 21-year-old Cameron Evans. After being evicted from the pub, the trio’s dispute escalated further in the pedestrian area of Mermaid Quay, with the entire fracas captured by on-site CCTV cameras.

Disturbingly, the altercation did not end with their removal from the venue. Instead, onlookers watched in disbelief as Gulliford and Evans began wrestling on the ground. Young, meanwhile, was seen striking out at Evans, intensifying the chaos, while others nearby attempted unsuccessfully to defuse the confrontation. Various individuals circled, darting towards each other as the brawl rolled on for a considerable length of time.

As efforts were made to intervene, a man in his sixties, Seamus O’Donnell, 62, became involved. Witnesses reported seeing O’Donnell seize Maria Young and force her onto the ground amidst the ongoing disorder. O’Donnell proceeded to scuffle with Gulliford as the disturbing melee continued, only to be eventually restrained by a member of the public.

The escalation resulted in Cameron Evans’ green t-shirt torn from his back, a visible testament to the seriousness of the incident. Prosecuting barrister James Evans later commented in court that the trio of Gulliford, Young and Evans were “enthusiastic and persistent” in their involvement, while O’Donnell’s role was described as significantly less active, though nonetheless serious.

All four participants were soon arrested, and their interviews painted a troubling picture of alcohol-fuelled violence. Young expressed regret, admitting to being “disappointed” with her own actions and conceding alcohol was a factor. Gulliford declined to answer questions. O’Donnell, meanwhile, told police he had consumed eight pints of beer and agreed the episode would have disgusted onlookers. Evans, for his part, revealed he had drunk eight bottles of Corona and half a pint of Stella Artois, acknowledging that he too was appalled by his behaviour.

The matter came to a head at Newport Crown Court on 6 June, with all defendants entering guilty pleas to affray. The court heard of Gulliford’s extensive record of previous convictions, ranging from battery and harassment to driving with excess alcohol and a firearms offence. O’Donnell also carried a criminal history dating back several decades. By contrast, Evans and Young were previously of good character.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Daniel Williams condemned the conduct on display that evening, referring to it as “absolutely disgraceful” and expressing hope that the defendants understood the severity of their behaviour. Emphasising rehabilitation over incarceration, he imposed a 12-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work each for Evans and Young. O’Donnell received a similar order, but with 60 hours of unpaid work, reflecting what the court determined to be a lesser role. Gulliford, amid a longer history of offending, was fined £500, with a 14-day custodial sentence hanging over him should he fail to pay.

Incidents such as this raise ongoing concerns about the role of alcohol in fuelling public violence, especially in city nightlife hotspots. Community leaders have called for increased awareness and preventative measures to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors to Cardiff Bay.

While the sentences chosen aimed to reflect the seriousness of the brawl without resorting to custody, the public response has demonstrated little tolerance for such behaviour. Cardiff Bay, a key attraction for both locals and tourists, is keen to maintain its reputation as a safe and welcoming environment. There are now renewed appeals to ensure such scenes are not repeated, safeguarding the area’s standing for years to come.
