Caught on Camera: Spade-Wielding Trouble Tackled in Derby!

Ever seen a real-life action movie moment unfold right before your eyes? This happened in Derby city centre when a man, Jamie Birks, decided to wreak havoc with a stolen spade. The 38-year-old took the liberty of swiping the tool from a council trolley and started swinging it wildly at advertising boards along St Peter’s Street.
The chaos was all captured on camera, showing Birks brandishing the spade like a makeshift weapon. But it wasn’t long before the drama took a turn. A brave bystander in a black hoodie momentarily retreated after Birks swung the spade towards him. Seizing the chance, another quick-thinking passerby swooped in, tackling Birks to the ground as two PCSOs rushed to help restrain him.

Despite being pinned down, Birks didn’t go quietly. In a rage, he lashed out, striking and kicking the officers. Even after being hauled off to the station, his aggression didn’t wane. During a cell search, Birks lunged at an officer, biting his leg. His fury continued with threats, headbutting, and spitting at officers.

Facing justice, Birks, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assaulting five emergency workers. Last month, he was handed a 27-week prison sentence by North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates’ Court.
Sergeant Mark Sharma from Derbyshire Constabulary praised the swift actions of officers and citizens for quickly neutralising the threat. He highlighted the incident as a glaring reminder of the everyday dangers police face.
What a dramatic day for Derby! Let’s hear it for those quick-thinking, brave individuals who stepped up and kept the streets safe.
