Exciting news for Cardiff! The city council is on the move with plans to transform Central Quay into a vibrant community, with up to 730 new apartments on the horizon. Located off Penarth Road, this prime spot is part of the redevelopment of the iconic Brains Brewery site. The council has just approved the purchase of the land, opening the doors to a mix of privately-rented and council homes.
This development couldn’t come at a better time. After declaring a housing emergency due to rising homelessness back in December 2023, the city is in dire need of more affordable housing. With this project, Cardiff is set to maintain its pace in providing affordable homes amidst growing demand.
Councillor Lynda Thorne highlights the opportunity this brings, with over 2,000 affordable homes projected to be delivered in the next five years through the council’s efforts, alongside 1,300 from housing associations. Although significant progress is underway, the challenges remain.
Council leader, Cllr Huw Thomas, is thrilled about the potential for social housing at this site, aiming to extend the city centre southwards and make a seamless connection to Cardiff Bay. With the unanimous nod from the council, the next step is selecting development partners to refine the types and quantity of homes to be built.
