A Newport man, Ian Hennah, aged 58, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for crimes that have deeply affected the lives of several women. Hennah was convicted of raping a woman while she slept and taking indecent images of women in private settings without their knowledge.

The disturbing contents were uncovered after police examined a seized hard drive, revealing secret recordings of women using the toilet. He also admitted to taking images from underneath women’s clothing — a gross invasion of privacy often referred to as “upskirting”.

In court, harrowing victim statements revealed the mental turmoil caused by Hennah’s actions. One victim spoke of her life being turned upside down and living in constant anxiety, while others described the fear and violation they felt, reluctant to use public toilets again.
Defending, Abigail Jackson mentioned Hennah’s personal struggles, including his daughter’s death in 2007, and noted that he had developed a drinking problem. Despite these factors, the court recognised the severe impact on the victims and imposed a harsh sentence.
Hennah will also be subject to sex offender notification requirements for life and face a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. The judge’s decision aims to bring some measure of justice to the victims, who continue to cope with the aftermath of these violations.
