Lucy Connolly, jailed for 31 months for inciting racial hatred following a tweet after the Southport tragedy, is expected to be released from prison this Thursday. Connolly, married to Conservative councillor Raymond Connolly, had sparked outrage with her post on X the day three children were killed by Axel Rudakubana in Southport. She wrote, “Mass deportation now, set fire to all the f****** hotels full of the bastards for all I care… if that makes me racist so be it.”

After the post, viewed over 300,000 times in just a few hours, Connolly pleaded guilty and faced sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court last October. Her imprisonment attracted criticism, with some labelling the punishment excessive. However, Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the court’s decision, emphasising that while free speech is vital, inciting violence is not tolerated.

Not everyone agrees with the sentence, though. Lord Young of Acton, representing the Free Speech Union, called it a “national scandal,” pointing out that others have evaded such penalties for similar offences.
