**Fresh Search for Madeleine McCann Launches in Algarve as Police Deploy Specialist Radar Technology**

Eighteen years after the harrowing disappearance of Madeleine McCann from a holiday apartment in Portugal, a renewed search effort is underway in the Algarve, with Portuguese and German police collaborating on the operation. The latest phase, which began in early June, is the most significant development in the case for two years and is attracting renewed global attention.

The focal point of this latest investigation is a countryside area near the former residence of Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect who was identified by German authorities in 2020. Currently held in Germany for an unrelated offence, Brueckner is incarcerated for the 2005 rape of an American tourist and is scheduled for release later this year. His earlier exoneration from a number of other historical sexual offence allegations has not diminished investigators’ interest in his potential connection to Madeleine’s case.
In the days leading up to the search, local authorities were observed sealing off rural tracks and erecting operational tents in the vicinity of Brueckner’s previous home. According to sources close to the investigation, the operation was launched at the formal request of German officers, who remain at the forefront of efforts to solve the disappearance. The search area lies between Praia da Luz – where three-year-old Madeleine vanished in May 2007 – and Brueckner’s former property, a location that has long been of interest to detectives.
The substantial search will cover 21 privately-owned plots, extending across diverse terrains including wells, abandoned ruins, and water reservoirs. Teams assigned to the area comprise around 30 German police personnel, supported by forensic specialists. Notably, modern radar scanning equipment will be deployed to survey subterranean locations, in the hope of uncovering new evidence that could provide fresh leads.
This week’s search, scheduled from 2nd to 6th June, represents the most intensive activity in the McCann inquiry since a 2023 operation focused on the Arade Dam, some 40 minutes from the Ocean Club resort where Madeleine disappeared. That dam had attracted investigators’ attention following revelations that Brueckner had described it as his “little paradise” and frequented the site, documenting his visits in photographs and videos. Despite hopes at the time, that search failed to yield any significant findings.
Additional scrutiny has also been brought to bear following the emergence of evidence in a German documentary broadcast in 2022, which suggested that Brueckner occasionally worked as a handyman at the Ocean Club complex. The implication of him having access to the area at the time has further entangled his profile with ongoing investigations.
Despite the substantial German and Portuguese law enforcement presence, the Metropolitan Police in Britain – who have been running their own investigation under Operation Grange since 2011 – have confirmed that no British officers will join this current operation. Nonetheless, Scotland Yard remains apprised of developments, underscoring the international aspect of the inquiry which continues to grip public and media attention.
The McCann family’s ordeal remains tragically unresolved. Last month, Kate and Gerry McCann marked the 18th anniversary of their daughter’s vanishing with a note reiterating their unyielding resolve. “The years appear to be passing even more quickly and whilst we have no significant news to share, our determination to ‘leave no stone unturned’ is unwavering,” the couple stated. Their words resonate with many across the world who continue to follow the case, which remains one of the highest-profile missing person mysteries of recent times.
As the latest searches proceed, authorities have indicated operations will run until 6th June unless compelling evidence prompts an extension. The attention now turns to what, if anything, this extensive deployment of resources and advanced technology will uncover in a case that, for nearly two decades, has remained heartbreakingly unsolved. The world watches and waits, hoping finally for answers.
