ππ Despite the surge in entrepreneurial spirit among teenagers, a university degree still holds significant value for many, according to a recent study. 80% of the surveyed teens believe having a degree is key to success, yet 75% dream of starting their own businesses. π€π

The study included 500 young individuals aged 16-19, revealing that 55% see higher education as the only natural step after school. Interestingly, while a traditional degree path remains preferred, 36% of teens are already dabbling in side hustles. πΌπ¨

However, it’s not all smooth sailing for young entrepreneurs. Funding is seen as a major obstacle, with 51% highlighting it as their biggest barrier. Plus, 46% feel they lack necessary mentorship to forge a path on their own. πΈπ€

Simply Business commissioned the research as part of their Young Entrepreneur Fund, aiming to support budding young business minds. Winners will receive Β£5,000 grants after completing a business support programme from youth enterprise charity Hatch Enterprise. ππ·
Musician and entrepreneur Professor Green, a judge on the panel, emphasises the unconventional paths to success: “I never went to university. It was all about hustle and figuring things out.” He recognises the raw ambition in todayβs youth but notes they often lack guidance to turn dreams into reality. π±β¨
The research also found 61% of teens believe schools fail to teach essential business skills. Yet, nearly half are driven by a desire for independence, hoping entrepreneurship will lead to financial freedom. Another 48% think being their own boss will boost earnings, while 35% dream of turning hobbies into careers. ππ‘
Julie Fisher, CEO of Simply Business, highlights the untapped potential: “Our research tells a compelling story β millions of young people dream of being their own boss. But only a fraction realise it. This initiative provides vital funding, mentorship, and showcases incredible entrepreneurial opportunities.”
Professor Green’s recent meet-up with A-Level students resonates deeply. “Itβs about betting on yourself,” he said. “Not everyone needs a degree to succeed β but belief, support, and a chance go a long way!” πͺπ
