A shocking incident at Tameside Hospital has made headlines after Dr Suhail Anjum, a consultant anaesthetist, admitted to having a brief sexual encounter with a nurse in an operating theatre while a patient was under anaesthetic. The 44-year-old doctor was seen in a compromising position, tying up his trousers, while the nurse’s trousers were down. The duo’s moment of indiscretion was witnessed by another nurse who quickly reported it.

Dr Anjum, who moved to the UK from Pakistan in 2011, has confessed to the misconduct, admitting it was a lapse in judgment during a challenging personal time. He revealed that stress from family issues, including the premature birth of his youngest child, clouded his judgement. Despite the scandal, the patient under anaesthetic remained unharmed.

The incident, which occurred in September 2023, was investigated internally, leading to Dr Anjum leaving the hospital in early 2024. He has since returned to Pakistan but wishes to rebuild his career in the UK. Admitting his actions were ‘shameful’ and a ‘one-off error,’ Dr Anjum expressed remorse for compromising the trust and professionalism expected in the medical field.
With the hearing set to continue for several days, the panel will determine whether Dr Anjum’s fitness to practice is impaired. This story serves as a reminder of the significant impact personal stress can have on professional lives and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries in sensitive environments.
