Who’s perched 200ft above Cardiff? Meet Gavin and Stacey, the city’s feathered celebrities! These majestic peregrine falcons have taken up residence atop the clocktower at City Hall, surveying the bustling life below. While students and birdwatchers might catch glimpses of these avian acrobats, many Cardiff residents are unaware they share their city with the UK’s largest falcons.
For over a decade, Gavin and Stacey have made the clocktower their home, a testament to the adaptability of these once-endangered creatures. During the 1960s, peregrine populations plummeted due to human activities and pesticides. Thankfully, with new protections, these speed demons—capable of diving at 200mph—have rebounded, now gracing urban settings such as Cardiff.
The falcons haven’t just been a silent spectacle. Last week, an eagle-eyed visitor in Grange Gardens spotted one indulging in its favourite meal, leaving a trail of pigeon feathers. With a diet of pigeons, ducks, and other small birds, these raptors are incredible hunters.
Local school children affectionately named them after TV’s beloved Gavin and Stacey. Over the years, the falcons have successfully hatched numerous chicks, including four this year, who have since left the nest.
Despite City Hall’s closure for renovations until 2026, Gavin and Stacey remain unfazed, continuing their daily routine high above the city. Keep your eyes to the skies for a chance to witness these incredible birds in action! 🦅🌆
