Did you know that nearly one-third of women over 65 are keeping secrets from their spouses? According to a recent survey, 31% of people in this age group have secretly stashed away some assets, with 14% hiding amounts over a whopping £50,000! 🕵️♀️💸

But why all the secrecy? It seems many remain in marriages for practical reasons, like financial stability and property concerns. In fact, 16% of people say it’s just financially easier to stay hitched. Meanwhile, in most couples, men take the lead on money matters, but not all is as it seems. A good chunk (22%) of those whose partners manage the finances worry about their future if left to cope alone. 😰

It’s not just in the wallet where things are off-balance. When it comes to household chores, 49% of women and only 15% of men say they shoulder most of the work. And while a quarter hold a modest savings pot under £10,000, over 10% are property-rich with homes valued at £500,000+. 🏠
Despite the baggage, 24% think it’s “too late” for divorce after 65, although 12% have considered it. The beginning of January, especially after the holidays, often brings marital tensions to the surface.
Family lawyer Ben Evans sheds light on this, pointing out that many older couples feel stuck but must disclose all assets in case of separation. There’s help out there to ensure fair settlements and financial support without feeling trapped. So, if you’re someone silently grappling with these issues, know there are options! 💼⚖️
