A distressing incident involving a 16-year-old girl highlights the dangers of online interactions. A 34-year-old man, Thomas Treharne, sent her explicit content via Snapchat, leaving her traumatised and leading to self-harm. The girl, initially engaging in what seemed like an innocent friendship, faced inappropriate advances from Treharne, culminating in him sending a shocking video. As she struggled to cope, she turned to cannabis in an attempt to forget the ordeal.

In a heartbreaking statement, the victim revealed the ongoing impact on her mental health, including anxiety and sleepless nights. Treharne, with no prior offences, admitted to sending the offensive video and faced Cardiff Magistrates’ Court. His tumultuous past, including mental health struggles, isolation, and a gambling addiction, was highlighted in his defence.
Treharne received an 18-week suspended sentence and must complete a rehabilitation programme. He was also ordered to pay compensation and abide by sex offender regulations. This case serves as a stark reminder to stay vigilant in online interactions and seek help when needed.
