Tesco’s Avocado Quota: New Policy Implemented After Record-Breaking Sales Spike

Tesco is shaking things up with a new invention that might just change how you pick your avocados! 🍐 At five select stores, the retailer is trialling an avocado scanner to help you choose the perfect fruit every time. Whether you like them ready-to-smash or prefer them on the firmer side for a salad, this nifty device gives you a ripeness reading in seconds. How cool is that?

Named after Dutch innovators One Third, these avocado scanners work like mini X-rays, peeking inside to see what stage of ripeness the fruit has reached. This means less waste and fewer mushy surprises when you cut them open at home.

Lisa Lawrence from Tesco shares, “It’s all about helping shoppers choose the avocado that’s right for them. Plus, with smashed avocado on sourdough being all the rage, we think these scanners are going to be a hit!” 🥑📈

The trial is happening at the Cheshunt Extra, Colchester Superstore, Stratford-upon-Avon Superstore, Wokingham Superstore, and Salisbury Extra. With avocados surging in popularity—15 million more were sold this year alone—Tesco is committed to making them even more shopper-friendly.

In partnership with Westfalia Fruit, Tesco is also leading the charge for sustainable packaging, ditching plastic labels for lasered versions and shifting to eco-friendly cardboard and paper options. 🌍💚
