**Motorists Face Significant Disruptions as Major Road Closures Hit Wales Today**

Wales is experiencing substantial traffic disruptions this Saturday, 2 August 2025, with roadworks and closures affecting several key routes across the country. Both essential maintenance and unexpected repairs are impacting daily travel, making journey planning crucial for anyone heading out on Welsh roads this weekend.

The M4, Wales’s vital east-west artery, along with other major thoroughfares such as the A40 and A470, are among the roads subject to varying degrees of closure. Commuters, holidaymakers and logistics operators are all being urged to check for the latest updates and plan alternative routes where possible, as the closures have the potential to cause significant delays.
Among the most critical overnight disruption, the M4 eastbound between Junction 32 at Coryton and Junction 30 at Cardiff Gate will be closed from 8pm tonight until 6am Sunday morning. This is to allow resurfacing work to proceed safely. Standard diversions are in place via the A4054, and commuters should be aware that these works are anticipated to continue periodically until 21 August.
Additionally, in Bridgend, the M4 between Junctions 37 and 38 is undergoing a long-term project, resulting in two lanes being shut and the implementation of narrow lanes in both directions. This arrangement will persist until 30 November. This area is a notable pinch point, and regular users are likely to experience delays.
Flintshire is also feeling the pinch as the A541 eastbound is shut for gas main works between the Tesco roundabout and the A494 Wylfa roundabout. These essential utility works are due to be completed by 8 August, but until then, local traffic may need to seek alternative routes.
Meanwhile, the A5 Menai Bridge in Gwynedd is subject to temporary traffic lights between the Antelope and Telford Road roundabouts. As a result, drivers can expect delays in this important corridor, especially as these works are projected to continue all the way through to the end of the year, only concluding on 31 December.
Further down the list, the A483 at Garthmyl in Powys has traffic lights operating in both directions for ongoing works at the B4385. These constraints are expected to clear shortly, with a projected end date of 5 August.
The A40 near Monmouth is operating under a contraflow system due to roadworks between the Dixton and Whitchurch roundabouts. As this is a busy cross-border route, motorists are being warned to build extra time into their journeys up until 22 August.
Another overnight closure affects the southbound A470 between Abercynon and Pontypridd from 8pm, reopening at 6am on Sunday. Diversions are in place and ongoing resurfacing is due to finish by 16 August. This route is vital for those travelling through the Valleys and into Cardiff, so further congestion is a possibility.
Elsewhere, both long- and short-term roadworks are having an effect: emergency repairs are causing traffic lights and delays on the A488 near Hope (Shropshire) until 1 September; and the A487 between Tre’r Ddol and Furnace in Ceredigion features temporary lights for works not expected to finish until March 2026.
Communities along the A4093 in Rhondda Cynon Taf, the B4312 in Carmarthenshire, and the B5429 in Denbighshire are also contending with closures or part-closures due to a mix of water main and general road improvements, some of which will last into 2025 or even 2026.
Regular travellers and commercial operators in Wales are reminded to stay abreast of these changes, heed any local signage, and consider subscribing to government or news briefings for up-to-date travel information. Officials have apologised for any inconvenience, pointing out that these works are essential for long-term road safety and infrastructure reliability.
For those journeying today and over the coming weeks, patience, attentiveness, and forward planning are being strongly advised as Wales embarks on this major programme of transport improvements.
