Tragedy struck during the opening weekend of the Premier League season at Brighton & Hove Albion’s Amex Stadium. A 72-year-old Brighton fan sadly passed away after falling ill during the second half of the tight match against Fulham, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Despite the fast response from medical staff, the supporter couldn’t be saved. The club expressed its heartbreak on social media, stating, “The thoughts of everyone at the club are with the family and friends of a 72-year-old supporter who sadly passed away following the conclusion of today’s match against Fulham.”
Brighton’s chief executive, Paul Barber, reflected on the emotional impact of the incident: “This was an incredibly sad end to the match this afternoon. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family and friends of the gentleman who lost his life.”

Fulham FC also extended heartfelt condolences to the fan’s family, acknowledging the sombreness of the occasion for everyone involved.
The game went on without interruption, a decision explained by the club, who noted that stopping play could have disrupted emergency efforts and caused further complications. Emergency services, including paramedics and club staff, worked tirelessly at the scene, employing CPR and a defibrillator in their attempt to save the fan’s life.

The club’s emergency medicine consultant praised the professionalism of everyone involved in the response: “Though the outcome was tragic, the level of medical care and the support provided by stewards and police was exemplary.”
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the supporter during this incredibly tough time. 💙 #BHAFC
