Heartbreaking news from Down Under – a father and son from Caerphilly, Wales, tragically lost their lives in Australia. Robin Reed, 46, and his 17-year-old son Owen were enjoying a family holiday when a sudden change in sea conditions turned a sunny day at the beach into an unimaginable tragedy.
The family, having arrived in Brisbane, joined up with friends Shayane and Michael Evans for a day trip to the scenic Round Hill Head at Seventeen Seventy in Queensland. The inquest revealed that the beach seemed safe, with no warning signs indicating danger. Upon arrival, the children, including Owen, eagerly went into the water. It was a typical outing until Shayane noticed the sea becoming rougher and saw Owen being caught in a rip, struggling to stay afloat.
Robin, instinctively rushing to save his son, dove in after him. The sea quickly turned perilous, with huge waves crashing over them. Michael, witnessing the chaos, also attempted to help but found himself battling the fierce currents before two tourists managed to pull him to safety. Emergency services, including police, ambulance, and a helicopter, rushed to the scene, desperately searching for the father and son.
Owen was found washed up on the beach at 4 pm; tragically, he was already gone. Robin’s body was later recovered from the sea, both having succumbed to the relentless waves. The pathologist confirmed drowning as the cause of death, consistent with the tragic circumstances described.
Coroner Rose Farmer concluded that the water deceptively seemed calm at first but swiftly turned perilous. Robin’s heroic attempt to rescue his son highlighted his bravery in an unforeseen and life-threatening situation. Owen, swept out by the worsening sea, met a fate no one could have predicted in what was ruled a tragic misadventure.
