**Heartbreaking Reminder of Railway Safety: Stay Alert!**

An 11-year-old boy, Jaiden Shehata, tragically lost his life at the Bourneview footpath crossing near Kenley, south London. He was on his way to school when a train travelling at about 50mph struck him. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) believes the young boy was distracted by a video on his mobile phone. The CCTV footage revealed that Jaiden appeared to be focused on a glowing screen, unaware of the approaching danger.

This devastating accident underscores the importance of safety at level crossings, especially for young users. Unlike some crossings, this one lacked any barriers or warning lights, relying solely on users to stop, look, and listen before crossing. Sadly, six near misses were reported at this location between 2018 and 2023, highlighting the area’s risks.
The RAIB recommends that UK schools introduce targeted railway safety lessons to ensure children understand the dangers that come with distractions near tracks. They also suggest making level crossings safer by enhancing visibility and considering risk mitigation for younger users.
Our thoughts are with Jaiden’s family, friends, and all affected by this tragic event. Let this remind us all to stay vigilant and mindfully aware when near railway tracks.
