Tragedy struck the Welsh rugby community with the heartbreaking loss of Paul-André Blundell, a young player whose life was cut short after a freak tackle left him paralysed from the chin down. Fondly known as PA, Paul-André died just months later from a blood clot in his lung, leaving friends, family, and supporters devastated.

Among those deeply affected is Welsh actor Matthew Rhys, who grew up alongside PA in Cardiff. Rhys has since become a passionate advocate for spinal research, honouring his late friend by supporting the P-A Blundell Legacy Fund. This fund, in partnership with Spinal Research, aims to find groundbreaking treatments for spinal cord injuries.
PA’s parents, Rob and Gerri, have dedicated their lives to preserving their son’s legacy. Through their charity, Trust PA, they’ve raised over £600,000 to advance research and bolster rugby safety initiatives. Their campaign, “EYES UP,” focusing on safe tackling, has even been recognised by World Rugby.

Rob and Gerri’s tireless efforts have been praised, with many hailing their dedication as a beacon of hope in the fight to provide life-changing treatments for paralysis. In memory of a remarkable young man, this fund promises to perpetuate his courage and optimism, fuelling advancements towards a brighter future for those affected by similar injuries.
Gerri recalls PA as a charismatic force, whose vibrant life was transformed by a single tragic moment. Her son’s story continues to inspire, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in spinal injury recovery. As the Blundells work tirelessly, there’s genuine hope these efforts will lead to monumental breakthroughs, turning tragedy into triumph.
Let’s remember and honour PA’s legacy by supporting these crucial initiatives, paving the way for a future where hope prevails.
